General Meeting Minutes

Call to Order, Roll Call
The general meeting of the Flanders, Riverside and Northampton Community Association was called to order at 7:08 p.m. on June 23, 2003 at the Flanders Nutrition Center. Executive Board members Mike Brewer, Tom Weber, Dave Brewer, Janice Artandi, Eugene Rausch, Ellen Rausch, Lonaway Muldrow, and Mary Anne Corwin were in attendance during roll call. A total of 25 registered members were in attendance at the time of roll call.

Minutes of General Board Meeting of May 19
Janice Artandi read the minutes of the May 19 General Board Meeting prepared by Mary Anne Corwin. Mary Anne indicated a correction from K-12 to K through 12 should be made.

Motion: Mike Brewer made a motion to accept the minutes as corrected and Lonaway Muldrow seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Minutes of Special Executive Board Meeting of May 23
A special meeting of the Executive Board was held on May 23. Mike Brewer discussed the work the Executive Board is doing to address the letter received from IRS concerning the association's application for a non-profit status.

Motion: Mike Brewer made a motion to accept the minutes and Tom Weber seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Minutes of Executive Board Meeting of June 8
Mike Brewer read the minutes of the June 8 Executive Board meeting.

Motion: Lonaway Muldrow made a motion to accept the minutes and Dave Brewer seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Agenda

Motion: Mike made a motion to deviate from the agenda and Dave seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Guest Speaker

Riverhead Charter School: Steve Charkow, Principal of the Riverhead Charter School provided an introduction to the school. He introduced Steve Cohen who performs day-to-day operations and Darlene Troge, the school's Director. Darlene said the school was founded because it felt that some students were not receiving the education they should and that some were illiterate. She discussed the operations, programs, hurdles and goals of the charter school. Steve Charkow provided details on the school's start up and its partnership with Edison. The school is a public school for a maximum of 600 students and there is no tuition. Fourteen districts send children to the school, with Longwood sending almost as many as Riverhead. The school serves Kindergarten through 5th grade. They hope to add 6th grade next year and 7th and 8th in subsequent years. The curriculum was discussed and questions were taken from the floor.

United Way: Janice Artandi, who is on the East End Board of United Way introduced Mardythe DiPirro of Peconic Community Council. United Way helps to support the work of 180 agencies on Long Island like Peconic Community Council. United Way works by going to large corporations for donations from employees and gives to local organizations. Mardythe discussed the efforts of her association in human and health services, such as affordable housing, transportation and racial disparity.

Treasurer's Report
Eugene Rausch read the Treasurer's Report, showing a balance of funds of $4,701.91.

Motion: Mike Brewer made a motion to reimburse Ellen Rausch for stamps for $14. The motion was seconded by Dave Brewer and passed unanimously.

According to Dave, he personally donated $50 to Juneteenth rather than a donation from the association, which had been previously agreed to by the association, since organizers of Juneteenth could not accept checks.

Administrator's Report
The Administrator's Report was summarized by Mary Anne Corwin.

Beautification Committee
Patty Hopkins gave details about the committee's car wash in June, which raised $390. Patty has a flower bulb sample for a possible plant bulb sale. Mike Brewer contacted LIPA to go over the project and the electric for the Routes 105 & 24 intersection.

Code Enforcement Committee
Walter Olsen Jr. created a form for submission of code violations and will have them available for the next meeting.

Education Committee
Lonaway Muldrow read the Education Report. She stated that Mary Ellen Harkin is expected to be voted in as President of the School Board. Lona said that the Riverhead School District wants to have a police officer on guard at the school and that the Riverhead Police Department has applied for a grant to cover the cost.

Government Committee
Reading of minutes was waived by Mike Brewer. Members can obtain copies from Mike or view them on the website.

Membership Committee
Ellen Rausch stated there are 90 members. Lona signed up USA Deli. Four new members signed up. Mike Brewer asked each member to try to sign up one new member.

Publicity Committee
Mary Anne Corwin said many items were added to the website. Details are in the written report.

Youth Committee
Dave Brewer read the Youth Committee Report, following his first Youth Committee meeting. He provided a list of possible activities and events, and is targeting the July 28 "Movie in the Park" and trying to get 30 people to get a bus. Mike indicated that Ron Zaleski was looking for assistance from Southampton Town for the Friday Youth Nights at Peconic Health & Racquet Club. Mike Brewer felt that our association should write a letter to Supervisor Heaney in support of the request for assistance.

Special Projects
Tom Weber stated he reserved Red Creek Park for the picnic in August. Mike Brewer will be the liaison for the picnic. Mary Anne will complete the flyer and tickets.

Old Business

Non-Profit Status: Mike stated he met with Vinny Chiaramonte and that he spoke with Diane Gentry at IRS. They agreed that Diane will choose the section under which the association may be granted non-profit status. Vinny will send an amended form and the letter the association wrote last month by overnight mail on June 13.

Hamlet Study: Mike Brewer stated he did not feel the study was completed enough. Further discussion will be held on July 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Town Hall.

Special Equalization Rate: According to Mike, Supervisor Heaney went to Albany on June 10 to request an extension to the rate. We should hear something in August.

T-Shirts: Sales were discussed.

New Business

Correspondence: Mike Brewer discussed correspondence from the association and correspondence received.

Committee Reports: Mike would like each committee chair to write a summary at the bottom of each report for reading purposes.

Suggestion Box: Mike asked members to please use the suggestion box if they have suggestions for the organization.

Raffle
Mary Ellen Sarno won the 50-50 raffle. The amount to the association is $32.50.
