Call to Order, Roll Call
The general meeting of the Flanders, Riverside and Northampton Community
Association was called to order at 7:08 p.m. on September 22, 2003 at the
Flanders Nutrition Center. All Executive Board members were in attendance.
Approximately 40 members were in attendance. A quorum was met.
General Meeting Minutes
Janice Artandi read the minutes of the July 28 General Meeting. Mary Anne
Corwin read corrections submitted by Mike Brewer.
Motion: Mike Brewer made a motion to accept
the minutes. Tom Weber seconded the motion, which passed.
Announcements
Mike Brewer made the following announcements: On October 4 from 10 a.m. to
3 p.m., the Flanders Little League will have a car wash. Our association
is holding another plant bulb sale.
Guest Speakers
Mike Brewer invited candidates for town trustee to speak and asked each to
limit their speech to five minutes. The following candidates were present
and discussed their views during a question and answer period, which
lasted until 8:37 p.m.: Alex Gregor (D), Scott Strough (R), Hank Beck (D),
Fred Havemeyer (R), Rebecca Jayne (D), Ed Warner (R), Harriet Sanchez (D).
Candidates Marge Schab(D), John Semlear (R), and Eric Schultz (R) were
unable to attend.
Treasurer's Report
Eugene Rausch read the Treasurer's Report, showing a balance of $4,459.44.
Dave Brewer stated there are picnic expenses to be reimbursed.
Executive Board Minutes
Janice Artandi read the changes made to the minutes of the July 17th
Executive Board meeting.
Motion: Mike Brewer made a motion to accept the minutes as corrected.
Lonaway Muldrow seconded the motion, which passed.
Education
Lonaway Muldrow stated that Riverhead School Superintendent George Duffy
is backing off asking for police officers at the school.
Government Involvement Committee
Reading of the report was waived by Mike Brewer, who advised to see him
for copies.
Membership Committee
Ellen Rausch received a check for a business, but was not sure if the
property was located in one of the hamlets. Mike Brewer confirmed it was.
Publicity Committee
Reading of the report was waived by Mary Anne Corwin.
Youth Committee
Dave Brewer indicated a rowing program is available for 8 year olds and up
at the Peconic Health and Racquet Club. Dave spoke to Nancy Lynott from
Southampton Town who indicated the town may fund a youth program for the
area. A member of the audience mentioned that development was started for
the baseball field.
Special Projects Committee
No report was read.
Administrator's Report
The reading of the report was waived but Mary Anne Corwin indicated that
we have to apply for the non-profit status from New York State.
Correspondence
Letters were sent for tonight's and October's meeting. Heaney will attend
and Garabedian stated that Democratic candidates will attend.
Meeting Signs
Dave Brewer asked about meeting signs. Mary Anne advised they were
completed and that members are taking care of placing the signs.
Annual Picnic
Dave Brewer mentioned that Best Choice in Riverside donated products for
the picnic.
Old Business
Mike Brewer thanked everyone who came to the picnic and said photos are
available.
Beautification Committee
Rose Nigro made a presentation on the hamlet signs for Route 24 and Route
105 intersection which shows the background as gray with burgundy letters,
after meeting with Wedel Signs who provided suggestions. Mike Brewer
stated he wants to send a letter to Southampton Town to ask for a $3,000
grant for a rock wall for the sign to be placed by the Big Duck. Rose
mentioned that the committee is doing another plant bulb sale. Patty
Hopkins said she wanted a vote for paint for the signs.
Motion: Mary Anne Corwin made a motion to
permit the Beautification Committee to spend up to $200 for paints and
supplies if they could not get donations to cover the cost of the
materials for the hamlet signs. Dave Brewer seconded the motion, which
passed.
Next Meeting
Mike Brewer asked members to have the October meeting start at 6:45 p.m.
to accommodate the supervisor's schedule.
Motion: Allen Perkowski made a motion to
start the October meeting at 6:45 p.m. Janice Artandi seconded the
motion, which passed.
Other Announcements
Mike Brewer stated he spoke to Donna Giacontieri. She said that demolition
would start at Tire Craft next week. Ground has been cleared for the
trooper barracks and a sign has been erected. Mike said a certificate of
recognition for the donation to the Juneteenth celebration signed by Tim
Bishop was received. Janice Artandi provided a clarification regarding the
October meeting and the League of Women Voters. Allen Perkowski suggested
that next year we sponsor a separate Meet the Candidate's Night in
addition to our regular General Meeting. Rose Nigro has a petition to stop
the casino. Mike Brewer said that signing the petition would be a personal
choice and that the petition is not a FRNCA petition since it was not
discussed with the membership. Patty Hopkins indicated she needs a check
for the plant bulb order.
Raffle
Mike Bruno won $40 in the 50-50 raffle. He donated $20 to the purchase of
paint for the Big Duck. The share to the general fund was also $40.
