The September Meeting of the Flanders, Riverside,
Northampton Community Association, Inc. was held on September 23, 2002 at
the Flanders Nutrition Center. There were 29 paid members and 6
non-members in attendance.
The meeting was opened at 7:15 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance led by President Dave Brewer. Minutes from the August meeting were unavailable due to Secretary Janice Artandi's unexpected absence. Guest speaker for the evening was Democrat Tim Bishop who is seeking the office of the First Congressional District against Incumbent Republican Felix Grucci. Mr. Bishop discussed his agenda, which includes education, corporate reform/pension protection, prescription plans for the elderly and protection of our natural resources, especially here on Long Island. He ended his visit by fielding questions from the audience regarding Social Security, Brookhaven National Lab, Medicare, Illegal Immigrants and a Post Office Zip Code for our area. A special thank you was given to Lonaway Muldrow for her efforts and participation on the Candlelight Memorial that was held on September 11 at Ludlam Avenue Park. The Beautification Committee held their monthly meeting on September 16, 2002. Minutes from the meeting were read by Patty Hopkins. Members at the Beautification meeting discussed the possibility of removing the trees from the southeast corner of Flanders Rd. and CR 105, which was also brought to the FRNCA meeting for open discussion. Carl Iacone from the Bayview Pines Civic Association will bring this matter to the attention of his Association and discuss it at their next meeting. Pending the decision of that meeting, a motion was made for removal of the trees in question by Allen Perkowski and seconded by Barbara Swislosky. Further discussion will take place at the October FRNCA meeting. The Beautification Committee also announced they are having a flower bulb sale as a fund raiser and anyone interested in obtaining a brochure should see Patty Hopkins after the meeting. VP Mike Brewer gave an update on the Hamlet Revitalization Study and stressed the importance of involvement by returning all completed surveys. Mention was made of the upcoming vote for the continuation of the Community Preservation Fund. A yes vote will help our community, since up to 2% of this fund can be allocated to the school district to help lower our taxes. YOUR VOTE DOES COUNT!!!!! Also mentioned was the possibility that Riverhead Central School District may have a board member leaving. It would be beneficial to our community if someone could volunteer to accept this position. In addition, an announcement was made that anyone wishing to tour the Riverhead Charter School is welcome. Arnold Braunskill, who is involved with the Charter School has invited the Executive Board as well all members to visit. Also, on the topic of the Charter School, the money that was to be allocated to the Charter School from the RSCD was never received. Funding was finally given from state aid by Comptroller H.Carl McCall. In closing, a motion was made to send a card to Janice Artandi and flowers to Mary Anne Corwin by Lonaway Muldrow and seconded by Patty Hopkins. The 50/50 raffle was won by our new member David Fox. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM. |
