No business matters took place.

Guest speakers Tim Byrns, Brian Gallagher, and Brian Kurtz from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation showed a Power Point presentation on ecological restorations after fires.

This is the 10th year anniversary of the Sunrise Wild Fire (August 1995).  There are three (3) factors for a wild fire:  fuel, weather and topography.  When these conditions are right, wild fires can happen.  In order to help prevent future wild fires, the DEC’s Fire Management System have a plan for a controlled burn.  This burn removes brush that normally would turn into a wild fire under the right conditions.  There are 350 acres in the Sarnoff Preserve.  The treatment will begin possibly the end of July or into August.  The burn will be in stages and probably extend until the end of 2006.  The highest risk area will be the first stage.  Publicity regarding this Fire Adapted Ecosystem Project will be by postings, radio, local newspaper, and News 12.  Two (2) days would be the minimum notice.

Our second guest speakers were Town of Southampton Police Officer Lawrence Schurek and Sergeant Ken Mujsce of the Street Crime Unit.

Officer Schurek explained some safety tips and procedure in reporting crimes.  No complaints are taken over the telephone.  All complaints must get an officer to respond.  He explained that there are two (2) patrol units in our area.  For quality of life issues, at least three (3) different people must call in on the same complaint for an officer to repond.

Sergeant Mujsce has been working his present job for 17 years.  He explained that the Narcotics Unit was started by Chief Overton.  Sergeant Mujsce explained that 50% of this units time is spent in the Flanders area.  He explained the 1. 2. 3. step sex offender levels:  level 1 is the least offender; level 2 is considered high risk; and level 3 is worst case offender.  A committee evaluates these people.  Pictures and addresses of these people are available through the police station.  On line information is available at criminaljustice.state.  As far as gangs are concerned, the police department is working together with the County and State.  He stated that parents need to have more control over their child’s whereabouts.  Parents also need to know who their child’s friends are.
